Dangerous by Design - Allegheny County
We’ve adapted the Dangerous by Design report from Smart Growth America for Allegheny County. It shows how bicycle and pedestrian road fatalities have changed over time, where they are concentrated, the conditions at the crashes, and who we need to reach out to in order to address them.
This analysis shows that crashes in Allegheny County, which had been declining since 2017, spiked in 2021. Most crashes happen in low lighting, at mid-block, and on dry roads. The victims are disproportionately male. High-speed and PennDOT-owned roads have a disproportionate share of fatalities. Route 51 had the most fatalities of any road in the county, and North Versailles had the highest rate of deaths per 100,000 people.
