Child on Bike Killed in Homewood

On Sunday August 18 at 5:30 PM, nine-year-old Courtney Carter was riding her bike near the intersection of Rosedale Street and Tacoma Street in Homewood. Witnesses say that she was riding on a side street and crossed at the intersection when she was struck by a driver in an SUV. She was taken to Children’s Hospital in critical condition. At 6:24, she was pronounced deceased. The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with police, and as of this writing has not been charged.

Harmony Borough Driver Hits Kid on Bike, Flees the Scene

On August 9th, a boy participating in a summer triathlon camp at Zelienople Community Park rode his bike through the intersection of Highland Avenue and Pittsburgh Street in Harmony Borough when he was hit by a driver, who then fled the scene. Camp counselors helped the boy off the pavement and took care of him until paramedics arrived and took him to the hospital. Fortunately, the boy only suffered cuts and bruises and was released from the hospital later that day.

Two Kids Sent to Hospital after Tarentum Crash

On August 2, sisters 14-year-old Alei Luther and 11-year-old Natalie Orr were at the park at the corner of 9th Avenue and PA 366 in Tarentum with their cousin, 15-year-old Riley Myers. As they crossed in the crosswalk on PA 366 to head home, a driver “came out of nowhere” and hit Alei and Natalie. Alei suffered a broken finger and a broken leg, which needed to have a metal rod surgically implanted. “I tried getting up because I saw Natalie on the ground,” she said. “Then, I tried to get up to get to her, but I couldn’t get up.” Natalie suffered a broken pelvis and several broken ribs, as well as a punctured lung. Riley, who was uninjured, immediately ran to the girl’s home to get their mother. “I thought [Natalie] was dead,” she said. According to Tarentum Police, the driver wasn’t speeding, and stayed at the scene of the crash. Alei has since showed signs of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, including recurring nightmares of the crash. “I can’t go back up there,” she said.

Garbage Truck Strikes, Injures Woman in Wheelchair

On July 19th, shortly after 9:30 AM, Donna Goldinger began to cross Brownsville Road in her electric wheelchair, from in front of Pete’s Beer Distribution to the Carnegie Library at the corner of Matthews Avenue. When she was nearly across, she was struck by the driver of a City garbage truck. She suffered a serious compound leg fracture and was taken to the hospital. The driver of the garbage truck has been tested for the use of drugs or alcohol and put on desk duty pending the outcome of an investigation.

When her two- and three-year-olds fell asleep, she and her third child walked to a convenience store to get food for the next day. While they were out, the two- and three-year-olds woke up, left their room, and began to walk along Route 51, where the three-year-old was struck by a driver.

6-Year-Old Killed Crossing Street to School Bus Stop

On the morning of February 24 in North Belle Vernon, 6-year-old Aria Woznick left for school with her older siblings. According to police, she walked out of her house, reached the sidewalk on Fayette Street, started to cross, and was hit by the driver of a car. Parents did their best to help before a helicopter could arrive to take her to UPMC Children’s Hospital, where she died. A family friend has set up a GoFundMe to help cover funeral costs.
